PROJECT:
Students prepared, implemented and analyzed a "spot
check” citizen survey
in Horizon Park subdivision.
The students, who were assisted by police department staff,
had only five days to complete the project. They distributed
36 surveys and 24 were returned.They
succeeded
in producing survey results that will be used in the coming
months by police administration to better serve the Horizon
Park community.
What they found:
Information contained in the analysis of the surveys indicate
that a large percentage (66%) of Horizon Park community citizens
feel safe in the neighborhood and are most concerned with
speeding vehicles, drug use/distribution and curfew violations.
The survey analysis further indicated the citizens desire
to have more crime prevention programs in their neighborhood
along with a citizen patrol program.
Results
Chief Don Hatcher stated
that the Leander High School students did an outstanding
job in helping the police department better
understand
the
concerns and needs of the Horizon Park citizens and the department
will implement programs to help answer those needs.
Chief
Hatcher advised that “directed patrol,” focusing
on speeding vehicles, has been implemented and a “Citizens
Patrol” program is in the development stage and will
utilize Citizen Police Academy alumni.
